SIBU: A seminar on Melanau language and a workshop on ‘ Dictionary Entry’ will be held at Samudra Hotel in Kuching from Jan 25 -27.

The event will be coordinated by Matu, Daro and Pulau Bruit Dictionary Development Committee. Its chairman Dr Raduan Serap said the programme is aimed at producing the Melanau dictionary covering the community in the three areas.

“The seminar is slated for Jan 25 while the workshop on Jan 26 and 27.

“As seats are limited, registration for the programme will be on a first- come-firstserved basis,” he told a press conference here yesterday.

“What’s interesting about the programme is that participants will be involved as collectors with some as testers at the workshop ,” he added.

Those interested can contact Raduan at 014- 6776766 or Tambi Bakeri 019- 5716819 by Jan 18 at the latest.

Raduan added the initiative to come up with the dictionary involved Pulau Bruit Graduates Organisation ( PGPB), Matu Graduates Association and the Sarikei Melanau Association.

“After several discussions among the three, a working committee to follow-up on the initiative was formed about two years ago.

“We’ve also held a series of discussions with the Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka Sarawak branch to seek cooperation and insight into the proper guidelines and methodology in the provision of dictionaries,” he said.

He added that the committee has also sought cooperation from Universiti Malaysia Sarawak’s ( Unimas) Faculty of Language and Communication on the matter.

“On Dec 14 last year, we officially formed our Dictionary Development Committee with the cooperation of our three associations and the Faculty of Language and Communication,” Raduan said.
