SIBU: Another foreigner who worked inside a barge in Rantau Panjang Industrial Zone on Jan 9 has died of suspected gas poisoning, bringing the total number of fatality to three.

The three dead workers have been identified as two Indonesians Syahrir Ramadhan and Irmansyah, and a Bangladeshi national Rone Matbbor.

Four others survive the incident.

They are Bangladeshi nationals Maznu and Act, and Indonesians Tamsil and Mohammed.

All seven workers were repairing a barge at a shipyard in the industrial zone about 20 minutes’ drive from downtown Sibu.

When they failed to emerge at 6pm, their supervisor contacted the Fire and Rescue Department, who, when they entered the barge, found that seven men had passed out.

They were immediately given oxygen, but Maznu and Act later died to what is believed to be gas poisoning.

Syahrir died at the Sibu Hospital yesterday.

The barge was brought from the Philippines, and had been at the shipyard for weeks in preparation for maintenance.

District police chief ACP Stanley Jonathan Ringgit, together with several officials from National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health ( NIOSH), visited the scene yesterday morning.

He said the police would conduct a thorough investigation.

Meanwhile, the four victims who survived the ordeal are reported to be in stable condition.
