UCTS offers new undergradu­ate programme in Industrial Chemistry

SIBU: University College of Technology Sarawak ( UCTS) recently launched a new programme – Bachelor of Industrial Chemistry ( Honours) under School of Engineerin­g and Technology (SET).

The four-year programme comprising of eight semesters with a total of 120 credit hours is designed to prepare highly skilled manpower for the developmen­t of various industries in Sarawak.

This new undergradu­ate programme is in line with the ambition of the Sarawak Government in developing various industries in the state by fulfi lling the demand for profession­al graduates and highly skilled manpower in chemical technology fields.

“For the past two years we have been developing the programme and has obtained approval from the Ministry of Education [Ref: N/545/6/0100] and Malaysian Qualificat­ion Agency, MQA [Ref: MQA/PA 9400],” said Norhasmill­ah Abu Hassan, programme coordinato­r for Bachelor of Industrial Chemistry.

“Various scholarshi­ps are available to provide fi nancial assistance, such as Board of Directors Scholarshi­p, Yayasan Sarawak, Yayasan Sabah, Yayasan Toh Li Hua, and many more. Students may also apply PTPTN for fi nancial aid,” she added.

Norhasmill­ah said graduates with Bachelor of Industrial Chemistry (Honours) can serve in companies engaged in oil and gas, oil palm, rubber, plastics, metals, pharmaceut­ical or start their own business in science or chemical technology.

“Graduates will be recognised as certified chemists under Malaysian Institute of Chemistry (IKM) which is important for career advancemen­t in Science and Chemistry field.

“On top of that, UCTS will help and monitor their profession­al and career progressio­n after they fi nished their studies and become alumni,” she pointed out.

Seven laboratori­es at UCTS with advanced and stateof-the- art equipment allow students to do practical and experiment­s, giving them hands- on experience in applying the concepts learned and gain proficienc­y in the use of high-tech analysis equipment and device.
