KUCHING: State paralympic swimmer Jamery Siga is looking to better his personal best times in the World Para Swimming Championship at the Pandelela Rinong Aquatic Centre at Petra Jaya from July 29 to Aug 4.

The 3 3 - year- old nat ional swimmer who hails from Limbang said the good results from the world meet would help him to qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics in Japan.

“At the World Para Swimming Championship in Mexico two years ago, I finished in fourth place in the men’s butterfly.

“This time around, I am looking to improve on that record because I am aiming for a slot to the Japan Paralympics,” he said.

Jamer y added t h at t he championship is one of the biggest swimming events in the world and most of top para swimmers would be competing in Kuching as a warm-up for the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics.

“Therefore, I don’t want to miss the action in this edition, and contribute to the country and especially to Sarawak.”

Meanwhile, Jamery is still waiting for the decision from the Sarawak State Sports Council ( MSNS) regarding his salary as he has pulled out from MSNS training.

“I wanted to focus on looking after my children after my wife passed away last year. That is the main reason why I decided to return to training here.

“If everything turns out right, I will be commencing my training as soon as possible to prepare for this championship,” he added.

Jamery will be competing in his pets events 50m butterfly and 200m freestyle in the international event that is expected to be participated by 800 swimmers from 80 countries.

This championship offers 170 gold medals to the male and female swimmers who have physical, vision and intellectual disabilities.
