BINTULU: Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg has assured the people that Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) would put Sarawak as the first priority in its struggles towards bringing in more development to the state.

According to him, such focus serves to enable members of the multi-racial and multi-religious society here live in peace and harmony with one another, as well as to improve their living standard into ‘one that is better than yesterday, and tomorrow better than today’.

“This is the time for us as we are mature enough, and can think for ourselves about the plan on how to continue the efforts by ‘Tok Nan’ (Pehin Sri Adenan Satem – Sarawak’s fifth chief minister), to safeguard Sarawak’s rights,” Abang Johari, who is also GPS chairman, said when welcoming the ‘GPS Flag Rally’ convoy that arrived at the civic centre here yesterday.

Meanwhile, the chief minister commended the convoy members, led by Layar assemblyman Gerald Rentap Jabu who is also Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Youth chief, for undertaking the journey that kicked off in Lawas and proceeded to Limbang, Miri, Bintulu and other regions across Sarawak.

In his remarks, Rentap said it took them about 12 hours to travel from Lawas to Miri via bus, adding that he was touched by the presence of Abang Johari upon arrival here yesterday.

“Today is a great day for us because the chief minister is with us this afternoon. As the convoy leader, this is historic – yesterday (Friday) was also historic as we introduced the GPS logo, our song and our struggles.

“What’s more important is that we are together with all four entities in GPS (PBB, SUPP, PRS and PDP) to safeguard Sarawak,” he said.

Rentap also called upon the people to give strong support to GPS, which is more responsive to the needs and voices of the young people to develop Sarawak and protect its rights.

His sentiment was echoed by Bintulu MP Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing, who said he also prayed that the rest of the journey would continue to be a safe and happy one for the convoy members.

Kapit MP Datuk Alexander Nanta Linggi, Minister of Local Government and Housing Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian, Minister of Utilities Datuk Seri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom, Minister of Welfare, Community Well Being, Women, Family and Childhood Development Datuk Fatimah Abdullah, Minister in Chief Minister’s Office (Integrity and Ombudsman) Datuk Talib Zulpilip, Assistant Minister of Water Supply Datuk Liwan Lagang, Assistant Minister of Local Government Datu Dr Penguang Manggil, Piasau assemblyman Datuk Sebastian Ting, Samalaju assemblyman Majang Renggi, Murum assemblyman Kennedy Chukpai Ugon, Serembu assemblyman Miro Simuh and Machan assemblyman Allan Siden Gramong were among those attending the event.
