1,700 SMK Chung Hua Miri students compete in cross-country race
MIRI: About 1,700 students of SMK Chung Hua Miri took part in the school’s cross-country event at Coco Cabana yesterday.
Flagging off the run, Assistant Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Lee Kim Shin also took the opportunity to advise students to spend more time outdoor and playing sports instead of staying indoors preoccupied with mobile phones and computer games.
“It has become more and more common for youngsters to spend longer hours on their mobile phones and computer games instead of doing outdoor activities. It not only is causing damage to the body and health but also resulting in the person becoming introvert or unable to communicate with other people.
“The Ministry of Education’s intention of organising the run at school, inter-school right up to divisional, state and national level, encourages students to go out, be active and be competitive, physically,” said Lee, alluding to programmes and events promoted by the government.
According to senior assistant of administration Lai Jia Ling, the best students from the crosscountry run will be selected to compete in the Miri inter-school event which will be held on Jan 19.
“Last year, our students won as the champion in the Miri Divisional level. It gives them the encouragement to strive further,” she said.
The students were divided into Group A (Form 4 to 6), Group B (Form 2 and 3) and Group C (Transition and Form One).
Also present at the event were the school’s Parents & Teachers’ Association chairman Dr. Abdul Aziz Abdul Rahman and deputy Dr. Jack Wong, principal Albert Ong Ngee Hong, senior assistant of Students Affairs Anthony Raj and senior assistant of co-curriculum Anthony James.
