Mixed emotions at KIA as released S’wakians reunite with loved ones

-

KUCHING: It was a heartwarming sight at the Kuching International Airport ( KIA) yesterday where the 40 Sarawakians, who were previously detained at a provincial prison in Cambodia, finally arrived home.

The VVIP Lounge of the KIA was already packed with family members prior to the 2.30pm touchdown.

As the main door opened, their eyes began to search for their loved ones amongst the incoming crowd.

One by one, everyone was reunited – they hugged, kissed and cried with one another, thanking God for answering their prayers for a safe return.

A Sarawak government delegation, led by Minister of Welfare, Community Well Being, Women, Family and Childhood Development Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah, accompanied the 40 Sarawakians during the journey home. Santubong MP Dato Sri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar was also on board.

There were 49 people on board the flight, including three from Sabah. The flight departed from Siam Reap International Airport at 10.35am, Cambodian time.

The Sabahans took their flight last night, while those from Sibu will board their flight home today.

The Sarawakians and Sabahans were among the 47 Malaysians who had been held in the Banteay Manchey Provincial Prison since Dec 11 last year.

They were released at 6.30pm ( Cambodian time) on Friday ( Feb 15) after investigations had confirmed that they were victims of a human trafficking syndicate.
