M10MP helps instil shared-learning culture in school children, says STU chief
KUCHING: The 10-Minute Assembly Module ( M10MP), developed by a group of lecturers and students wanting to make school assemblies more engaging, should contribute towards the development of school- children in terms of their leadership and communication skills.
Sarawak Teachers Union (STU) president Macky Joseph believes that when students are given the opportunity to take part in school assemblies, this would create a culture of shared-learning among their peers.
“There are schools that have already adopted the M10MP into their weekly assemblies, where students go on stage to present their science projects, perform sketches or other activities.
“This enables them to impart their knowledge and various skills to their peers through sharedlearning and at the same time, the students also develop the confidence in speaking in front of a crowd as well as the ability to think critically and be disciplined in time management,” he said in a statement yesterday.
Macky was responding to Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik’s recent suggestion for schools to adopt the M10MP as the minister found the module to be a creative, innovative and unconventional approach in making education interesting for students.
In this respect, Macky said school assemblies should be strengthened to suit the needs and expectations of the Ministry of Education to achieve its target for students to excel in various skills.
“We hope that the M10MP concept would be adopted by more schools as it fulfils the elements of innovation and creativity.”
Additionally, Maszlee had said last week that M10MP implemented during weekly school assemblies this year would focus on practice and appreciation of good values, while inculcating in schoolchildren the ‘thinking culture’.
He pointed out that through the module, which was introduced in 2017 to both primary and secondary schools, the assemblies would also highlight elements of the High Level Thinking Skills ( KBAT), creativity, assessment and self-attributes.
