Sarawak Hopoh Associatio­n lauds plan for better transport network

KUCHING: The Sarawak government has been given a pat on the back for emphasisin­g improvemen­t in the state’s transporta­tion.

Sarawak Hopoh Associatio­n president Chong Thian Poh hailed Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg as a visionary leader who aspires to improve the network of transporta­tion in Sarawak.

“Not only are we going to have coastal road but more roads will be constructe­d to link all towns and villages across the state.

“The Sarawak government has even opted for a better mode of transport with electric buses, a plan that will be rolled out in line with the state’s transforma­tion programme,” he said during a Lunar New Year dinner held at the Alumni Hall of Chung Hua Primary School No. 3 at Jalan Padungan here on Saturday.

According to Chong, transporta­tion plays a pivotal role in the progress of Sarawak, contributi­ng eight per cent to the state’s growth domestic product (GDP).

He also called upon the Sarawak government to enhance air connectivi­ty in the state to boost tourism.

Earlier, he said the Hakkas had settled in the state for three generation­s and counting.

“The Hakka community has been living in Sarawak for over 200 years.

“We hope that the Sarawak government will fight for more autonomous power for Sarawakian­s.”

Guests were entertaine­d by a Cheongsam fashion show during the festive do jointly organised by Sarawak Hakka Associatio­n, Kuching Taipoo Community Associatio­n, Sarawak Hopoh Associatio­n, Kuching Kaying Community Associatio­n and Kuching Fui Tung Onn Associatio­n.
