MIRI: The excited screams of over 1,000 pupils filled the Sri Bintang Hall at SK Jalan Bintang here as a lion dance troupe kicked off its performance during the school’s Chinese New Year celebration recently.

The event was part of the school’s integration programme where during each festive occasion, pupils would don traditional clothes to celebrate and learn each other’s culture.

Headmaster Ahmad Othman told The Borneo Post that the Chinese New Year celebration was the first such event for the year, and was organised by the school’s Chinese Language Club.

“This celebration is part of our ‘Rancangan Integrasi Murid Untuk Perpaduan’, or Rimup, where the children can celebrate and also learn about the different festive occasions with their friends, while also donning traditional wear,” he said.

He explained that the excitement shown by each pupil during such events shows that regardless of their religious background, they are eager to learn about the different cultures of their peers.

“Credit must also go to the teachers, support staff, parents and individual sponsors for contributing towards the success of this integration programme,” he added.

Apart from the lion dance performance by Miri Wai Sheng Dragon and Lion Dance Association, the pupils were also entertained by a Chinese song sung by Year 2 pupil Erica Tiong Li Qi.
