SIBU: Sarawak Bumiputera Teachers Union (KGBS) welcomes the federal Cabinet’s approval of the repayment of a RM1- billion debt to the federal government from the Sarawak government to fix dilapidated schools in Sarawak.
Its president Ahmad Malie lauded the federal and Sarawak governments’ effort for this, which would benefit Sarawakians, in particular teachers and students in the schools concerned.
“KGBS hopes that the RM1 billion can be fully utilised to repair and upgrade the dilapidated schools.
“We are confident that Sarawak Public Works Department as the implementing agency can carry out the work with full responsibility and integrity to fulfill the teachers’ and students’ desire of having a more conducive teaching and learning environment,” he said when contacted yesterday.
Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik had disclosed in a Facebook post that the federal Cabinet on Wednesday approved the repayment of a RM1-billion debt to the federal government from the Sarawak government to fix dilapidated schools in Sarawak.
Maszlee said the decision was made following the agreement between him and Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg during a visit to his office on Feb 19, to discuss issues that would benefit 436,000 students across Sarawak.
KGBS hoped that teachers and students in the schools concerned would strive to improve their respective performances when the repairing and upgrading works are completed, Ahmad said.
