Rep impressed by multi-talented rural pupils

MARUDI: Many rural pupils have inherent talents and qualities that could be nurtured and polished in order for them to excel not only at school level, but also at the state or even national levels.

Mulu assemblyma­n Dato Gerawat Gala made this observatio­n at the end of the five-day Baram District Primary School Sports Council (MSSR) Sports Carnival 2019 here yesterday.

The sports meet gathered 528 pupils representi­ng five zones – Tutoh Apoh, Ulu Baram, Central Baram, Lower Baram and Tinjar.

Gerawat noted that some of the pupil athletes not only broke the meet’s records, but were also talented in cultural performanc­es and singing.

“The athletes created a total of 24 new records in the MSSR meet; this shows a lot of talents among these rural pupils who can and should be nurtured in order to make them future champions at state and even national-level championsh­ips,” he said.

Gerawat also assured all that the Sarawak government is committed to repairing dilapidate­d schools, especially in the rural areas, following the acceptance by the Pakatan Harapan ( PH) federal government of the RM1- billion contra financing from the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS)led Sarawak government.

He said he had submitted a list of dilapidate­d schools in his constituen­cy to the Baram Education Office for the necessary action to be taken.

Later, Gerawat announced RM30,000 from his Minor Rural Project ( MRP) grant for MSSR Baram, while Telang Usan assemblyma­n Dennis Ngau announced an allocation of RM20,000 during the event’s opening ceremony.

The funding should benefit 68 primary schools and seven secondary schools across Baram District. Meanwhile, Baram Ulu Zone emerged the overall champion of the sports carnival, leaving Central Baram, Tutoh Apoh, Tinjar and Lower Baram at respective second to fi fth place.

Martin clinched the ‘ Best Boy Athlete Award’, while Stephanie Kijan took home the ‘ Best Girl Athlete Award’. Both represente­d the Baram Ulu Zone.

Deputy Baram District Education officer James Valley, MSSR Baram District chairman Samuel Iwat, state administra­tive officer Reagan Edwin and games organising chairman Badrol Seri were also present.
