Squash talent search underway in Samarahan, Petra Jaya

KUCHI NG: T he S qua sh Associatio­n of Samarahan ( SAS) are looking to produce players of calibre to represent the state and country in national and internatio­nal competitio­ns.

Its president Joseph Ting said squash used to be the sport for the elites but now that everyone has the opportunit­y to play squash at the Sarawak Squash Centre in Petra Jaya.

“With the proper support and programmes laid out to the players, we will able to produce players who can compete in competitiv­e championsh­ips in and outside Sarawak,” he added.

Ting recent ly led a SAS delegation to pay a courtesy call on the Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah at his office at Bangunan Baitul Makmur, Petra Jaya.

Acc ompa ni e d by c o ach Emmanuel David and committee members Shandrayah Kadir and Talis Dudom, Ting briefed the Asajaya assemblyma­n on the SAS calendar of activities for 2019.

“Karim wants squash to be for everyone. We are using the Sarawak Squash Centre in Petra Jaya as it has world- standard courts and facilities,” added Ting.

According to him, there are currently 36 SAS active players training under MSNS coach Emmanuel David.

“We are promoting the sport by doing recruitmen­t drives in Samarahan and Petra Jaya and we are targeting to have 50 active players by the middle of this year.”

SAS wi l l hos t the CMS Samarahan Leg from Mar 23-25. So far 108 players from Miri, Sibu, Kuching, Samarahan and Sabah ( by invitation) have confirmed their participat­ion.

“We are still waiting for the confirmati­on from countries such as Brunei and Bahrain,” Ting said.
