Canada Hill slope repair work begins

-

MIRI: An RM500,000 slope repair project began on Wednesday on a section of Canada Hill affected by a landslide in December last year.

Assistant Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Lee Kim Shin said the Public Works Department (JKR) project is expected to be completed within a month.

“The slope is about 40 feet deep and it involves gabion and piling works, geotextile installation which is used as soil separators, filtration, and reinforcement material to increase the stability of earth mass, and for the control of erosion, and the installation of retaining walls.

“Many road users use this road daily and we cannot close the road entirely, so while under construction, half of the road is closed and there will be people controlling the traffi c,” he said during a site visit on Thursday.

Lee called on road users to be cautious and patient while the repair work is carried out.

Meanwhile, JKR Miri divisional engineer Chong Chi Famm said the project could not start sooner due to a design issue.

“We could not start immediately because the original design is using the sheet pile and soil nail, the cost which is more than the budget, thus we needed to redesign and once the budget was approved, we started the work immediately and the dry weather is a good factor in this repair work,” he said.

Chong added another slope repair project near the current area would be tendered out this month.
