KUCHING: Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg has rubbished claims by a news portal that Petroleum Sarawak Berhad ( Petros) is similar to the scandal- ridden 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).

He stressed that Petros is a transparent regulatory authority for oil and gas activities in the state and was set up by the Sarawak Government to ensure that Sarawakians can participate in the upstream and downstream aspects of the oil and gas industry in the state.

It (Petros) is a regulatory body and we have transparent management. There’s no such thing as Petros being something like 1MDB. That website (that published the report) is malicious and has bad intention.

“It ( Petros) is a regulatory body and we have transparent management. There’s no such thing as Petros being something like 1MDB. That website ( that published the report) is malicious and has bad intent ion,” he said when of f iciating at the opening of Demak Fabrication Yard, the loadout of Bokor D Substructure and the completion of Anjung Topside Projects for Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd, here yesterday.

The chief minister asserted that the Sarawak government is an ‘accountable and responsible government’. “We are transparent. At the end of the day, we want to deliver things and what has been promised to Sarawakians.”

Although Abang Johari did not name the portal which published the report, it is believed he was referring to the article titled ‘ The Sarawak Oil Grab – Is Petros the 1MDB of Sarawak?’ which was published recently on a news portal which covers the oil and gas industry.

In the three- part article, the portal claimed that Petros was created as a vehicle to siphon oil money using similar tactics employed by former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and his cronies to allegedly embezzle billions of ringgit from 1MDB.

On Demak Fabrication Yard, Abang Johari said he hopes it will become one of Sarawak’s largest fabrication yards, capable of delivering whatever task given to Brooke Dockyard.

“The new Demak Fabrication Yard has a capacity of 16,500 metric tonnes compared to 8,500 metric tonnes from Sejingkat Yard, making the overall fabrication capacity for Brooke Dockyard at 25,000 metric tonnes per year.” Turn to Page 3, Col 4

Since 1996, Brooke Dockyard has always implemented elements of Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Management System in project operations such as during the fabrication of Malong Jacket and Topside and eventually secured OHSAS 18001:2007 on October 2009 until October 2018.

KUCHING: Brooke Dockyard and Engineering Works Corporation ( BDEWC) created history in the Malaysia Book of Records for being the first organisation to receive the ISO 45001: 2018 Occupational Health and Safety Management System under the scope ‘ The Fabrication of Structural Assembles and Modules for Oil and Gas Industries in Malaysia’ by Sirim QAS International Sdn Bhd.

BDEWC chairman Datuk Abang Abdul Karim Tun Openg said the achievement marks an incredible feat that corroborates the capability of Sarawakians in this industry.

“Since 1996, Brooke Dockyard has always implemented elements of Health, Safety and Environment ( HSE) Management System in project operations such as during the fabrication of Malong Jacket and Topside and eventually secured OHSAS 18001: 2007 on October 2009 until October 2018.

“After a decade, the top management decided to work towards the conversion of a new certification, namely ISO 45001: 2018 Occupational Health and Safety Management System, where Sirim QAS International conducted the certification audit and the outcome was a favourable one,” he said at the opening ceremony of Demak Fabrication Yard, the loadout of Bokor D Substructure and the completion of Anjung Topside Projects for Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd, here yesterday.

Abang Abdul Karim pointed out that with great achievement comes the effort to maintain it in order to ensure implementation and continuous improvement on the elements of the systems by all relevant personnel.

“I hope that Brooke Dockyard personnel will not limit themselves to this achievement and will continue to thrive and seek for means to improve further on the HSE Management System.”

On Demak Fabrication Yard which was officiated by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg, Abang Abdul Karim said it functions as a secondary fabrication yard for oil and gas modules and marine engineering fabrication in light of the current market demand, as well as for future potential projects.

The yard is located 5km from Sejingkat Yard on a 60- acre land at Demak Laut Industrial Estate Phase III. It has a capacity of 16,500 metric tonnes compared 8,500 metric tonnes from Sejingkat Yard, making the overall fabrication capacity for Brooke Dockyard at 25,000 metric tonnes per year.

“This asset is a huge advantage for us and has given us not only the passion but also the opportunity for us to see further and to think beyond in order to achieve what was previously impossible.

“With that said, Brooke Dockyard has managed to secure projects from Petronas Carigali and subsequently, commenced the fabrication for Anjung and Bokor Substructures by utilising Demak Yard in June 2017,” he remarked.

Abang Abdul Karim also revealed that the first major milestone and pride of Demak Fabrication Yard was the Anjung Substructure, which had completed ahead of schedule and loaded out successfully in September 2018, thus registering it as the pioneer on the success of the yard.

“To further emphasise on the triumphs of Anjung, Anjung Topside has already been completed and obtained Mechanical Completion Date ( MCD) in December 20, 2018 as per planned and will be sailed away in mid-April this year.”

Apart from that, he also noted that the Bokor project was awarded to BDEWC by Petronas Carigali, in which the scope of works cover front- end engineering design ( FEED) and detail engineering, procurement, construction, installation and commissioning ( EPCIC) for three topsides and three substructures, namely Bokor-D, Bokor-E and Bokor-F.

“Bokor substructures are fabricated right here at Demak Yard and shall follow the same path as Anjung and continue to manifest the capability of Demak Yard as mirrored to its massive capacity.

“The next milestone for Bokor project will be the loadout of BokorD substructure which is planned to be executed this month, with the installation phase scheduled to commence by end of this month,” he said.

Among those present at the ceremony were Assistant Minister of Transportation Datuk Dr Jerip Susil, Demak Laut assemblyman Dr Hazland Abang Hipni, Petronas Project Delivery and Technology senior vice president Mazuin Ismail, and Brooke Dockyard and Engineering Works Corporation general manager Norhizan Sazali.
