Go after jobs scam syndicates to prevent recurrence — Rep
SIBU: The police must come down hard on jobs scam syndicates as it is a form of human trafficking, says Pelawan assemblyman David Wong.
Speaking at a press conference prior to welcoming eight Sarawakians who were stranded in Monrovia, Liberia after being duped by such a syndicate, he said if no proactive action is taken by the authorities, such incidents will continue to occur time and again.
“I don’t want to see (something similar happening) tomorrow, then again next week, and no action is taken as if nothing had happened.
“We are lucky this time because the Sarawakians who were stranded in Liberia were found out (and helped) by Sime Darby (workers there),” he said.
The eight Sarawakians – stranded in Liberia since Feb 4 – landed at Sibu Airport at 9.45pm yesterday from Kuala Lumpur International Airport, accompanied by Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii.
They are Gawan Masin, 41; Enyang Ato, 66; Aji Surau, 39; Untol Luyang, 58; Salim Tahir, 49; Suhaili Gani, 39; Bon Egat, 45; and Dingai Nyalak, 47.
Apart from Wong, Sibu MP Oscar Ling, Lanang MP Alice Lau, and PKR Kanowit sub-branch secretary George Chen were at the airport to welcome them.
The eight will stay in Sibu for the night before returning to their respective hometowns today.
Meanwhile, Suhaili’s wife, who was among those at the airport, told reporters it was the third time her husband had accepted a job offer overseas.
“The first two jobs were not a scam. This time though, it took a wrong turn. He went there ( Liberia) and there was no job. I was very worried for him,” she said.
I don’t want to see (something similar happening) tomorrow, then again next week, and no action is taken as if nothing had happened.
