BINTULU: Three high impact programmes will be implemented in Sarawak this year to increase the level of awareness on Occupational Safety and Health (OSH).

Sarawak Occupational Safety and Health Department (OSHD) director Ir Dr Nor Halim Hasan hoped these programmes could create greater awareness among employers and employees of OSH and reduce accident cases at work.

“The first programme is the ` Move’ for shipping sector and this programme is to create OSH awareness at the shipyard.

“Our department in collaboration with Sibu Shipyard Association will be conducting a briefing, training and dialogue with members of the association,” he said in a statement following a working visit by Deputy Human Resource Minister Datuk Mahfuz Omar to Bintulu Port Holdings Berhad at Wisma Kontena yesterday.

He said the second programme is the `Outreach’ for estate and quarry sector which contributes the second highest occupational accident and fatality cases in Sarawak.

Nor Halim said four estates and quarries had been identified and inspection would be conducted at these premises to ensure they comply with the OSH standard at all times.

The third programme is `Spot The Hazard Teleconference’ for the construction and manufacturing sector for OSHD to identify any problematic working places through a two-way communication with the top management, he added.

“Apart from the three programmes, the department also will be conducting the OSH Mega Tool Box programme in conjunction with the World OSH Day on April 29 and the Workplace Accident Free Week programme in conjunction with the OSH Week on the second week of July.

“I urge the employers and employees to work together to improve the level of OSH so that we can have a conducive working environment,” he added.
