SMC: Many eateries yet to display ‘No Smoking’ signs
SIBU: A recent check conducted by enforcement officers from the Health Department here showed that out of the 148 eateries visited, 50 outlet operators had not displayed the ‘ No Smoking’ signs at their premises.
The smoking ban on all eateries in Sarawak took effect on Mar 1 this year.
Disclosing this yesterday, Sibu Municipal Council ( SMC) chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King said the operators of these 50 eateries said they were still waiting for the ‘ No Smoking’ signs to be given to them.
“So, I think there is nothing to worry about. For now, the ministry is doing the ‘educational’ enforcement, which ends on June 1 this year. So there will be no summons issued.
“We’re giving them a threemonth grace period,” he said after witnessing the operation to put up ‘ No Smoking’ signs at Sibu Central Market.
Tiong further said to date, nobody had been caught for lighting up at non- smoking areas.
“There are about 1,000 food premises in Sibu, and we hope the Health Department would have no problem checking all of them within these three months,” he said.
