UCTS bags four medals for inventions at MTE 2019
SIBU: University College of Technology Sarawak ( UCTS) won four medals for various inventions during the recent Malaysia Technology Expo (MTE) 2019 in Kuala Lumpur.
Its four researches won a gold, a silver and two bronze medals.
“Being a young university of only five years old, this is indeed an excellent achievement for UCTS.
“Furthermore, being a new university, these achievements reflect the high standard of UCTS research products, which are on par with other international researches as the participation in MTE also includes 18 other countries,” UCTS said in a press release yesterday.
The invention — `Markerless Cloud Badminton Motion Analysis and Benchmarking System’ by Dr Alan Ting Huong Yong, Jackie Ting Tiew Wei and Daniel Tan Yong Wen from School of Computing and Creative Media - won gold.
The invention encompassed a depth sensor and computerised system, capable of tracking and analysing badminton movements in real-time and automated manners without physical markers being attached on badminton players.
Additionally, the system is capable of performing movement benchmarking, where the players can benchmark their movements with the expert or even benchmark their own movements for consistency analysis. The cloud service also provides flexibility to the badminton coach and players in terms of data access and analysis. Associate Professor Dr A. Razak Yaacob and Ashraf A. Razak from School of Engineering and Technology won silver medal for their invention called `Ohmic Heating Test Tool’.
Ohmic Heating (OH) is a method where alternating current passes through a particulate food medium acting as a resistance between positive and negative electrodes which in turn volumetrically heats up the entire mass of the food systems.
This is an electrical circuit model that can verify the main electrical characteristics of an Ohmic heating process on particulate foods. The model needs a variable transformer to supply alternating current to the electrode of the Ohmic cell and the particulate food sample. The Ohmic Heating ( OH) test equipment tool prototype can be used for other industrial applications.
UCTS’ two bronze medals were won by research teams from School of Engineering and Technology.
The team from Food Technology programme headed by Associate Professor Dr Hii Siew Ling and her team members Pearly Wong, Koh Chen Chung, Associate Professor Dr Thomas Moh Shan Yau, Mohd Sabri Mohd Afandi and Suzy Rini Gindi won the bronze medal for their invention named ` Towards Honeyerrific — Kelulut Powder as Natural Superfood’.
The team came out with an invention to provide a novel kelulut honey product in the form of a dry material which can be easily handled, stored and utilised in substantially the same manner as sugar and other powdered or granular ingredients.
The newly developed EZ-MiX Kelulut Powder from this study can be regarded as superior product with relatively higher level of protein, carbohydrate and energy.
In addition, the product stability of EZ-MiX Kelulut Powder can be characterised by its significantly low moisture content (83 per cent lower than raw honey) and hence contributing to extended shelf life of the product.
The other bronze medal was won by Kee Keh Kim and Associate Professor Dr Ramli Rashidi from School of Engineering and Technology for their invention - ` E-Agro Information Control System (E-AgroIS)’.
E-AgroIS System is a cyberphysical system ( CPS) used to realise Industrial Revolution 4.0 model in agriculture sector at low- cost. The product automates agriculture farms cost effectively by using high-end technology.
It is very user- friendly and designed based on plug- and-play (PnP) concept so that farmers can deploy and operate the system without much dependency on technicians.
Flexible and universal design supports various application domains such as farming, greenhouse, aquaculture, hydroponics and others to accomplish productive automation of agriculture works at the farmer’s fingertip.
Apart from the functionality of remote sensing and automation, E-AgroIS is also a location-based system which provides several LBS- services to the farmers for alerting, resource conservation and optimisation.
MTE is an international event where inventors get an opportunity to connect with the marketplace and demonstrate their ideas to various manufacturers, distributors and businesses.
Themed Asia’s Inventions and Innovations Marketplace, MTE 2019 provides a platform for inventors and innovators to showcase their findings.
MTE 2019 was held at Putra World Trade Centre from Feb 21 to 23 this year and had become one of the region’s most recognised and respected international invention exhibitions, providing opportunity for start- ups or people looking for investors to invest on their innovations and designs.
