Terminate contractor for shoddy work — MP

-

SIBU: Bintulu MP Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing has called on the Works Ministry to consider terminating the contract if the contractor of the SibuBintulu road cannot do a good job.

In a press statement received here yesterday, Tiong said he felt frustrated each time he thought of the road project.

“A bus skidded into a drain there on Sunday.

“I hope not to see road fatality arising from this construction project. I suggest terminating the contractor if he cannot do a good job.

“I had in the past expressed concern over matters regarding travelers’ safety on Sarawak’s roads,” he said.

He added that he had appealed countless times to the Public Works Department and the contractors to do a proper job.

“I have told them not to wait till accidents and fatalities happen to act. This safety issue on road construction that I have raised many times has gone to a deaf ear. I feel helpless and frustrated.”

Tiong believed the accident at the Sibu-Bintulu stretch of the road on Sunday was due to the negligence of the contractor.

“The stretch lacks safety features. The stretch has collapsed once, a bus had skidded into the drain and there were also minor incidents here and there. What do the Works Ministry and the contractor have to say?”

He said Works Minister Baru Bian should rectify the problematic project.
