Miri too needs primary school for special needs children — Rosey
MIRI: There is a need for Miri to have a primary school to cater for special needs children in the northern part of Sarawak.
As it is now, the northern zone does not have any school that has facilities for students with special needs, said Assistant Minister of Women, Family and Childhood Development Rosey Yunus.
“It is very much needed as a place for children with special needs to study as they cannot be in the normal classes,” the Bekenu assemblywoman told The Borneo Post.
She was asked yesterday on the announcement by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg that the state government was looking into setting up a special primary school for special needs children soon.
The chief minister had instructed Minister of Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah to head a study on its viability.
Speaking at the launch of Datuk Amar Hajah Juma’ani Welfare Centre at Jalan Kulas in Kuching earlier this week, the chief minister hinted that the first school would be located in Kuching and if proven successful, the school would be expanded to Sibu and Miri.
He said with the establishment of a special school, special needs children would be given special attention by teachers specialising in psychology and health.
