Curtin among top 50 in two subject areas
MIRI: Curtin University continued to rank highly in the recently released 2019 QS World University Rankings by subject.
A press release said Curtin was ranked among the top 50 of universities across the globe in two subject areas, with Earth and Marine Sciences ranked 35th, while Mineral and Mining Engineering was second for the third consecutive year.
The 2019 QS World University Rankings by Subject considered more than 1,200 universities across 78 countries.
Curtin University Malaysia pro vice- chancellor, president, and chief executive Prof Jim Mienczakowski said the university is very pleased with the ranking.
“This speaks volumes of the quality of courses and education Curtin provides across all its campuses in Perth, Malaysia, Singapore, Dubai, and Mauritius,” he said.
Mienczakowski said the latest results are very profound for Curtin Malaysia, which offers relevant Curtin courses in the two subject areas – Bachelor of Science in Applied Geology and Bachelor of Engineering in Petroleum Engineering, as well as a range of relevant postgraduate programmes by coursework and research.
At postgraduate level, Curtin Malaysia offers among others Master of Science in Project Management, Master of International Business, and Master of Engineering Management, as well as postgraduate research programmes in Electrical and Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Accounting, and Management.
“Students taking these courses are thus assured that they are taking courses that are among the best in the world, and that is in addition to many other courses for which Curtin is top-ranked,” Mienczakowski added.
The latest edition of the world’s most- consulted university rankings among other things also showed Curtin achieved rankings in 24 subjects, with six subjects listed in the top 100 across the globe.
Those subjects included Architecture and Built Environment ( 51 to 100), Education ( 51 to 100), Civil and Structural Engineering ( 51 to 100), and Sports-related subjects ( 51 to 100).
Mienczakowski’s sentiments echoed those of Curtin University vice- chancellor Prof Deborah Terry, who said in Perth last week that that the results continued to highlight Curtin’s strengths.
“The QS World University Rankings by Subject offer the world’s most popular source of comparative data about university performance and I am delighted that Curtin continues to rank second in the world for Mineral and Mining Engineering,” Terry said.
“These results are a reflection of our dedication to high- quality research and teaching, and we remain committed to further developing Curtin’s standing as an international leader across more fields of study.”
Curtin University is Western Australia’s largest university and is ranked in the top 1 per cent of universities worldwide, with the university placed in the top 200 globally according to the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) 2018.
