PCAM looking forward to yet another productive year

-

MIRI: Palliative Care Association Miri ( PCAM) is looking forward to another year of strong public support towards its activities in effort to provide quality care for cancer patients from Miri to Niah areas.

Among the activities planned by PCAM are a palliative care workshop for doctors and nurses on April 4 followed by another one for the public and volunteers at the end of the year.

The Run for Love 2019, a charity event, to raise fund meanwhile is slated to be held on Sept 29.

These activities were among the resolutions agreed on at its annual general meeting last Saturday at Gymkhana Club Miri (GCM) here where re- elected president Dr Loh Yunn Hua thanked all volunteers and staff for their contributions in making 2018 a success.

“We did well in achieving our mission and vision. We have been blessed in that people from all walks of life came to visit us and donated cash and other gifts to our association,” she said.

Looking ahead, she said the association needed huge sum of money to run its activities and provide quality care for cancer patients.

The charity run has been a significant contributor to the association’s annual budget in the past 10 years.

PCAM’s core activity is its Home Nursing Programme which sees nursing staff visiting cancer patients needing palliative care regularly in and outside Miri, as far as Kuala Baram, Niah and Ulu Bekenu on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.

On Fridays, a doctor from the Miri Hospital will accompany the palliative nurses to visit cancer patients who need special care.

Home visits on Saturday afternoons will be conducted in Ulu Niah for example, with the help of a doctor from the Miri Hospital.

Essential but expensive medical equipment like oxygen concentrators, rippled mattress, hospital beds, nebuliser machines, suction machines and wheelchairs and others are loaned out to patients registered under this programme.

The association also welcomed the public to join as volunteers where the fee is only RM10 for life membership. For further enquiries contact 012- 8456480 or visit the Day Care Centre on Tuesdays.

The Palliative Day Care Centre at Lot 406 Piasau Garden, Jalan Taman Piasau Edar, here operates every Tuesday morning.

Massages by a team of experienced masseurs are given to cancer and stroke patients who come to the centre.

The centre caters to all cancer patients registered with the association and are recorded patients of Miri Hospital and those who are interested to learn some massage techniques are welcome to acquire the basic skills and help out.

Besides this, counselling services are also provided for patients while a handicraft group also meets for sewing and handicraft activities every Wednesdays.

Other activities organised for volunteers and patients throughout the year at the centre include celebrations, symposiums, talks and briefi ngs.

Outside activities also include training sessions for doctors and nurses to improve the quality of palliative care.

The new office bearers for 20192021 are vice president Veronica Wong, secretary Rose Lim, assistant secretary Regina Szetu, treasurer Richard Wong and committee members comprising Lucy Siew, Teo Bee Khun and Miko Yeo.

The special sub- committee members are Elizabeth Sim, Chang Yi, Remy Yii.
