-

BERLIN: Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) and German tour operator Tischler Reisen recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for joint marketing collaboration, at the Internationale TourismusBorse (ITB) Fair here.

STB chief executive officer Sharzede Datu Salleh Askor signed the MoU on behalf of the board, while Tischler Reisen was represented by its chief executive officer Michael Metzner during the ceremony held at the Malaysian Pavilion of the fair.

Apart from collaboration in marketing, the MoU also emphasised collaboration in both electronic and conventional media promotions, tourism seminars and mini roadshows across major German cities.

“We started the joint collaboration in tourism promotion with Tischler Reisen in Germany last year through digital marketing and seminars in four German cities. The positive outcome has enabled us to move this far,” said Sharzede.

She added that STB’s promotional efforts in Germany would intensify this year, with two major interests from Germany’s tour operators.

The signing ceremony was witnessed by Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah; Assistant Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Lee Kim Shin, the ministry’s permanent secretary Hii Chang Kee, and STB chairman Datuk Abdul Wahab Aziz.

Meanwhile, Abdul Karim also had a fruitful meeting with Lernidee Erlebnisreisen, a leading cruise and tour operator in Germany specialising in coastal and riverine cruises.

“It is a good start and the interest shown on Sarawak shows German tourism operators’ confidence in Sarawak as a viable tourist destination,” said Abdul Karim.

It is learnt that a total of 6,834 German tourists visited Sarawak last year.
