KRFC to hold rugby 7s tournament, dinner for anniversary
KUCHING: The oldest fullfledged rugby club in Malaysia, the Kuching Rugby Football Club will be celebrating its 60th anniversary on March 28.
It was established on January 30, 1959 and is much older than COBRA of Kuala Lumpur.
To commemorate the anniversary, KRFC is organising the KRFC 7s in association with Kuching Division Rugby Association at the Song Kheng Hai Rugby Field on April 6-7.
This event is sanctioned by Sarawak Rugby Union (SRU) and Malaysia Rugby.
Invitations have been sent to clubs in Hong Kong, Singapore, Brunei, West Malaysia, Sabah, Labuan and other divisions in Sarawak.
SRU president Richard Song Swee Jin has pledged full support to KRFC for its 7s tournament and anniversary dinner.
In this aspect, Song is also helping the club to raise funds by trying to help sell the tickets at RM150 each and 20 to 30 tables for corporate sponsorship of RM3,000 per table for the fundraising dinner.
“Hopefully, ex-ruggers and veterans especially those who played for KRFC in the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s as well as the corporate sponsors will come out to support this once in a lifetime anniversary. “A book written by renowned veteran journalist James Ritchie on KRFC’s rich history will be launched during the night by either the Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg or the Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah on March 28,” said Song. There will be a live concert while food trucks and merchandise stores will be set up at the venue during the two days of competition to add to the merriment and carnival atmosphere. The state Sukma team are expected to participate as warm-up matches for Johor Sukma 2020.
