Drug bust in Serian ends with arrest of 41 suspects
KUCHING: Sarawak police believe that they have busted a drug racket in Serian, with the arrest of 41 individuals during an operation yesterday.
Sarawak Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID) head Supt Sahar Abdul Latif said the operation, which involved 101 police personnel working in 23 teams, covered 19 villages in Serian.
Moreover, these 41 individuals – aged between 15 and 50 – are suspected to be drug pushers operating in their respective villages, he added.
“Among the suspects are members of a family, comprising a man and his 20-year- old son, as well as his five nephews aged between 15 and 20 years old,” he told reporters at Serian District police headquarters.
Two of the suspects, added Sahar, were arrested under the Dangerous Drugs Act ( Special Preventive Measures) 1985.
During the raids, police also seized drugs – namely ‘syabu’ weighing at 52.6g and ‘ ganja’ (marijuana) weighing 6.3g with estimated street value of RM10,715 – as well as a rifle and a sword.
The case would be investigated under Section 39B, Section 12(2), Section 6, Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, Section 8 of the Arms Act 1960, and Section 6 of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958, said Sahar.
Adding on, he also advised the villagers in Serian to cooperate with the police and come forward with any information about suspected drug activities in their respective villages.
