S’wak govt to look for funds for Brunei-Limbang stretch

LIMBANG: The Sarawak government will look for funding to make sure the second phase of the Pan Borneo Highway project connecting Limbang division to Brunei takes off as proposed.

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg said the Brunei government during a meeting with the Sarawak government had in principle agreed to build that stretch of the Pan Borneo Highway project.

“If the federal government wants to proceed with SarawakSab­ah Link Project without going through Brunei, we (state government) will build a road ( Pan Borneo) via Brunei as what had been requested by the people in Limbang and Lawas.

“We will look for own funds to continue with the project,” he stated when officiatin­g at the Badudun Festival and Buffalo Race 2019 at Kampung Gadong, Limbang yesterday.

Abang Johari said further that the Brunei government in principle had agreed to build a road to Limbang.

On another developmen­t, he said the state government will build six more telecommun­ication towers for Limbang and another five in Lawas to boost the internet speed and coverage in northern part of Sarawak.

Besides that, he said he would bring to the next state cabinet meeting the request for subsidy for the ferry connecting Kampung Gadong area with surroundin­g areas in Limbang to ease the burden of the people.

The ferry is still being used while waiting for the constructi­on of the second Limbang River Bridge to be completed by 2021.

Also present were Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, Assistant Minister of Agricultur­e Dr Abdul Rahman Ismail, Limbang MP Hasbi Habibollah, Batu Danau assemblyma­n Paulus Palu Gumbang, Limbang Resident Ir Ahmad Denney Ahmad Fauzi, Limbang district officer Superi Awang Said, Limbang District Council chairman Sufian Mohat and Limbang Malay Associatio­n chairman Mohamad Abu Bakar.
