MIRI: SMK Baru Miri managed to increase its Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia ( STPM) school average grade (GPS) to 2.79 compared to the previous year’s 2.45, obtaining 100 per cent pass in the process.

Its principal Jerrah Pandin said the achievement was a collective effort of various parties including the school staff, parentteachers association (PTA) and the students.

“Congratulations and thank you for the efforts of the students and all parties in improving the achievement of the school. I am proud of the results achieved and I hope this achievement will be improved in the future,” she said yesterday.

A total of 46 students of the school (40 human sciences stream and six science stream) sat for STPM exam last year, where top student Abdullah Nudin scored a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 4.0, followed by Enjeily Oleevia Peter (3.84).

For the science stream, Benjamin Chin Kuan Seng and Hamra Mohd Ismail both shared the same CGPA of 3.67.

Chin said he did not expect to get such good result, adding the key was to study smart and to get enough rest as burdening the mind with too much information and inadequate rest will not help.

Currently working for his family while waiting for the STPM result, he said he aims to be a software engineer and will try to get a spot in University of Malaya (UM).

Abdullah, who hopes to take up sociology at UM, said his ‘average’ result in Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) served as a wake-up call to do better in STPM.

“As I entered Form 6, I promised myself that I would strive to be the best and prove to my teachers that I can do it, and Alhamdulillah, it is proven today through my result.”

Meanwhile, Enjeily Oleevia, who is the eldest of three siblings, said she is undecided on what course to take for her bachelor degree but plans on enrolling in either Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) or Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas).

“Based on my result, my degree would be more towards business course,” said Enjeily, who is working as a sales assistant while waiting for her result.

Another excellent STPM student, Hamra, said praying and her family’s blessing were key to her success.

“What important is to pray to Allah so that He will give the strength and capability to study. No matter how busy you are with studying, you must spend time to help out your family because their prayer is important,” said the fifth of sixth siblings, who hopes to take up mechanical engineering.

Kolej Tun Datu Tuanku Bujang ( KTDTHB), meanwhile, scored a GPS of 2.40 where the best students were Elena Ruran Adolfo Libut (CGPA of 3.75), Chieng Ai Wei (3.50), Caroline Jelumi Entebang (3.42), Geoffrey Tivit Nyurak (3.42) and Liew May Farng (3.42).

Other schools in Miri with more than 2.8 GPS were SMK Merbau ( 3.07), SMK Lutong ( 2.99), SMK Chung Hua Miri ( 2.99) and SMK Agama Miri (2.88).
