Senior citizens among 7 fined RM500 each for illegal gambling
MIRI: Three senior citizens were among seven individuals fined RM500 in default one month jail by a magistrate’s court here for illegal gambling in a public place.
All the accused, aged 32 to 63 years old were charged under Section 6 ( 1) of the Common Gaming House Act 1953 read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code, which provide for a fine of not more than RM5,000 or six months’ jail or both, upon conviction.
According to the brief facts of case, the suspects committed the offence in a room at the back of a premises at Jalan North Yu Seng at 3.40pm on March 6.
Police raided the place based on public tip- off, and arrested the suspects playing illegal ‘Ho Hey How’. Also seized were cash totalling RM2,495 as exhibits.
Inspector Mohd Khai ri Mohd Noor prosecuted before Magistrate Kasyfurrahman Abang Ahmad while the accused were represented by Firdaus Morshidi.
In the same court room later Magistrate Kasyfurrahman ordered a man charged with possession of a dangerous drug (methamphetamine) to be released on RM2,000- bail with two local sureties.
He issued the order after allowing an application submitted by prosecuting officer Inspector Mohd Khairi Mohd Noor, for a new date for further mention as the chemist report was still pending.
The court fixed April 10 for mention of the case.
Lau Kung Liong, 50, from Pujut Corner here was charged under Section 12 ( 2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and punishable under Section 39A (1) of the same Act.
He could be jailed for not less than two years and not more than five years and canning not less than three times and not more than nine times on conviction.
Lau allegedly committed the offence at 9.10am on March 5 at his house in Pujut Corner here.
No plea of guilt was recorded. The accused was represented by Firdaus Morshidi.
