Rep concerned about delays plaguing Kapit Sports Field project

-

KAPIT: B u k i t G o r am assemblyman Jefferson Jamit Unyat has expressed his deep concern about the repair and upgrading works on Kapit Sports Field at Jalan Padang here.

The project kicked off on March 1 last year and should have reached completion last December.

However, the progress had been really slow and at times, interrupted, said Jamit.

It is said that the delays were due to certain problems between the main contractor and the subcontractor.

“It (works on Kapit Sports Field) was scheduled for completion in December 2018 – now, it’s already March 2019. This delay has caused great inconvenience to the Kapit community, in that this is the only sports field where the people would go for exercises after office hours, or to play football.

“I have received numerous complaints from the public about the delays. I call upon the relevant parties to take appropriate action and speed up the works,” the assemblyman told reporters during a recent inspection on the sites of three development projects in his constituency – the retaining wall along the banks of Sungai Ulu Selirik; earth- filling works and construction of concrete road at Rumah Jaweng; and the highlighted Kapit Sports Field.

“This is my third site visit to this ‘ padang’ ( field) and I could see some workers, busy with their tasks.

“In the last two visits, there was not even one worker. I hope that after this, (there would be) no more delays,” said Jamit.

Thelocalshavebeencomplaining about the delayed project, not only because the situation deprives them the venue to exercise or play sports, but it also causes several programmes to be put on hold.

These include schools’ annual ‘ Spor ts Day’, which i s an integral part of today’s school co- curriculum, and also the annual ‘Inter-Kapit District Land Sports’.

The non- avai labi l ity of a sporting venue also forces joggers to run along traffic-heavy roads, which is very dangerous.
