‘Chinese committed to safety, security of neighbourhood’

KUCHING: The Chinese community in residential areas are committed to lend a helping hand in safeguarding their neighbourhood.

One of the ways to contribute towards creating a safe, conducive and comfortable environment for residents is through security and development committees (JKKK).

An example of such commitment is the formation of the Green Road Security and Development Committee ( JKKK), said its chairman Tan Kok Chiang.

“The chief minister had previously mentioned that he wants the Chinese to help the local community particularly the Chinese living in residential areas and that is why we decided to form the Green Road JKKK.

“Through this committee, we hope to provide assistance ranging from social, safety, education and so on,” he told reporters after leading a delegation to pay Abang Johari a courtesy call at his office in Wisma Bapa Malaysia here yesterday.

Tan shared that the chief minister had also announced an allocation of RM50,000 for their newly formed JKKK.

“This allocation will be used to carry out operations and activities organised by the committee,” he said and expressed his gratitude to Abang Johari for the grant.

Prior to this, Tan and his fellow members were under the Batu Lintang JKKK which covered a huge area and big population.

“We are now divided into two sections with the formation of Green Road JKKK which will cover areas from Nanas Road to Rubber Road and this will be under Satok area.”

He pointed out that one of the first activities for the committee was a recent ‘gotong- royong’ at several areas to prevent the spread of diseases such as dengue.

“After this, we are planning to check on drains, roads and signboards to see if they are in good condition or in need of repair.”

Other plans for the committee include forming a WhatsApp group for each residential area.
