MBOR recognises first postal box at Mulu Deer Cave
MIRI: A tourism postal box placed at the entrance to Deer Cave in Mulu since 2017 was a unique out- of-the-box idea which became a topic of interest among tourists.
This first postal box placed at a Unesco heritage cave received recognition from Malaysia Book of Records ( MBOR) recently.
“Such initiatives in Mulu District will further promote eco-tourism through mail and postcards, apart from providing basic postal services to 4,696 residents in Mulu. In 2018, Mulu National Park received 21,665 visitors.
“Mulu Caves was selected for this tourism postal project as it is a Unesco world heritage site with various attractions such as the Sarawak Chamber, which is the largest cave in the world,” said deputy director of Sarawak Forest Department (SFD), Jack Liam while officiating at Rural Services Transformation Programme in Mulu on Thursday.
The programme was a collaboration between MCMC, SFD and Pos Malaysia under the Post Transformation Plan for Sabah and Sarawak initiative.
Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) Sarawak Region director Roslan Mohamad who also spoke said the tourism postal project was completed in July, 2017 with three components, namely Tourism Post Box, Information Corner / Kiosk and Community Post Box (for Mulu community).
Various other Tourism Postal Projects successfully launched include Mount Kinabalu highest postal box located at 3,289M above sea level.
Roslan disclosed that since programme started in May 2010, postal service coverage in both states has increased from 48 per cent and 58 per cent in Sabah and Sarawak in 2010, to 63 per cent and 86 per cent respectively by the end of 2016.
A certificate of appreciation was presented to Mulu community postman Edward Gani Bantan during the programme.
Also present were Mel Pos Malaysia chief operating officer Helmi Hashim, Mulu District administrative officer Robetta Janggi and a representative of Miri Resident Syafia Muhiyaddin.
