SMK Sibu Jaya’s ‘Med Kit’ innovation wins award at BIF
SIBU: SMK Sibu Jaya has won third prize in the ` Product Services and Marketing’ category of the Borneo Innovation Festival ( BIF) with its creation, ` Med Kit’.
The competition was held at Politeknik Mukah on March 10.
Teacher-in- charge of the school’s innovation team Mackencidy Bujang said ` Med Kit’ was a student project headed by Jasmira Sara Buntul, Hillary Jeffery Tian, Alynviana Rania Ricky and Augustine Lat Steward Tingom.
The first prize in the category went to IBS Unimas whose product was `Sustainable IBS Community Index Online System’.
Miri Industrial Training Institute with its product, airconditioner cylinder gas portable carrier, came in second.
Mackencidy said this was the first time SMK Sibu Jaya participated in a competition of such nature.
He said the project was initially aimed at fulfilling the school’s co- curriculum excellence evaluation.
“We did not think of submitting the project to BIF. However, due to the support from the school and the community, we decided to give a try,” he enthused.
He said the school started the project in 2017 with the aim of encouraging students to be more innovative and creative.
“Innovation and creativity are essential when it comes to problem solving,” he pointed out.
After the school level, the school then introduced the project to the community.
“Since then, we’ve also developed the skill and ways on presenting the project. We gained more confidence and with the support we received, we gave it a try at BIF,” he recounted.
According to him, `Med Kit’ was introduced after all the problems and weaknesses of first aid kits had been identified.
` Med Kit’ is much lighter and cannot not be damaged easily and is made from recycled bottles,” he said.
Meanwhile, ` Med Kit’ also received Silver Award in the Jury’s Evaluation.
Apart from ` Med Kit’, other innovation products, namely ` My Pro Screen’ and ` Multi Presentation Booklet’ also received Silver Award from the Jury’s Evaluation.
The two products were produced by teachers of SMK Sibu Jaya who included Agnes Senaun, Mackendicy Bujang, Julia Nabilah Sangkuai Abdullah, Chong Chung Seng, Randy Kembaren Zulfri, Victoria Benjamin and Wong Chiong Sing.
Principal of SMK Sibu Jaya Yusri Azhar Abdullah @ Leo Takip and senior assistant ( cocurriculum) Zulkarnain Farihin Abdullah contributed to the success of those projects through their support and involvement in the projects.
