‘Drainage woes at Ecopark to be over soon’
MIRI: The drainage problem that Ecopark residents at Jalan Sze Chuan have been facing for over three years will finally end.
According to Assistant Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Lee Kim Shin, the Sarawak government-funded flood mitigation and drainage project costing RM11,463,964 started on March 12 this year after going through open tender process and is expected to be completed by June 11, 2020.
“The drainage is about 1.8 kilometres long from the airport area and right up to the sea. So this water will not go to the Ecopark, hence this will solve the flood problem that the residents have been facing all the while.

“This is a permanent drainage solution. It took quite a while because Department of Irrigation and Drainage ( DID) had to go through the modelling of the drainage, design and because it also involves the acquisition of private land and so on. This has been an issue that I wanted to resolve. I sympathise with the residents here and I am thankful that we have come up with this solution,” he said during his visit to the Ecopark retention pond near Miri airport yesterday.
Commenting further, Lee said the retention ponds had helped to minimise flooding in the area all this while as a temporary measure.
The flood mitigation and drainage project involves demolition and reconstruction of entrance access to affected houses, protection and reinstatement of damaged properties and existing carriageway, kerb and footpath, temporary road diversion and constructional signs, top soiling and spot turfing of verges.
