Register with missions, M’sians abroad told
JAKARTA: Malaysian Deputy Foreign Minister Datuk Marzuki Yahya has advised Malaysians going abroad to register with the Malaysian missions in the destination countries to facilitate assistance in the event of calamities.
“Malaysians, when in another country, should make it a point to inform the Malaysian mission so that when there is a disaster, we can act immediately,” he told reporters after a meeting with several Malaysians at Malaysia Hall Jakarta, here.
He also expressed Malaysia’s appreciation to the Indonesian authorities and various other parties for helping the Malaysians affected by Sunday’s earthquake in Lombok. The earthquake triggered a landslide that killed two Malaysian women, Datin Tai Siew Kim and Lim Sai Wah, and injured nine others.
Tai, 56, was the deputy executive editor-in- chief of vernacular newspaper Sin Chew Daily.
Tai and Lim were among several Malaysians who were at the Tiu Kelep Senaru Waterfall when the 5.8-magnitude earthquake hit the island, followed by an aftershock of 5.2 magnitude.
Marzuki said the free medical treatment by hospitals in Lombok, the rescheduling of return air tickets without additional fees by travel agents, free hotel accommodation for the affected people, financial contributions by the Indonesian government and the cost of flying the remains of the two Malaysians via a Garuda Indonesia flight spoke volumes of the compassion and good ties both nations shared.
