MIRI: Naim Group of Companies' fire-fighting team in Miri sprang into action to help put out two bushf ires which happened recently at Permyjaya area.

The team, comprising more than 10 staff volunteers, was deployed to the sites to help authorities put out the bushfires.

The team faced var ious challenges such as extreme weather conditions and strong wind while attempting to put out the bushfires.

Naim's regional general manager for Miri, Patrick Kong, explained that Naim Miri has formed its fire-fighting team more than 20 years ago as part of its corporate social responsibility initiatives to assist the authorities in handling bushfires which can be yearly occurrences in some parts of Miri during the dry season.

Since then, the team has played an active role in helping to put out bushfires at Bandar Baru Permyjaya and Kuala Baram area. He added that the fire- fighting team is also equipped with basic fire-fighting equipment to assist authorities to fight fire where required.

Kong disclosed that the recent bushf ires were f irst spotted during routine patrols by the fire-fighting team.

“Our team spotted the fires and to prevent further harm, we immediately deployed our fire- fighting team to help put out the fires. We also reported the incidents to Bomba, which deployed manpower for this as well. In addition, we also informed ot her authori t i e s namely Department of Environment and Natural Resources and Environment Board.

“At this juncture, we would like to thank Bomba, Resident's Office and also the police for all their effort,” said Kong.

He a d d e d Na im's fire- fighting team conducts regular inspections and patrols not only at its development sites but also at surrounding areas.

“The frequency of such patrols is increased during the dry season due to high possibility of wildfires. Currently, we conduct three patrols dai ly. Besides patrols, we also display signage on our sites which clearly prohibit trespassing and open burnings. Some of the initiatives we carry out include the construction of ‘ fire breakers' at our sites to prevent the spread of bushfires,” he said.

Kong also said one of the equipments which added value to the team's fire-fighting efforts was the drone.

“We use the drone to monitor our sites and the areas surrounding them. With the drone, we are able to view happenings on ground in real time and respond to them. This has added great value to our operations, especially in terms of emergency responses.

“We will continue to be vigilant and remain committed in helping the authorities address this concern,” he said.
