‘Pesta Makan Tahun’ sees 34 villages taking part in celebratio­n

MIRI: The ‘Pesta Makan Tahun’ also known as Annual Feast Festival which is a thanksgivi­ng event for the Kedayan community in Sibuti this year sees 34 villages celebratin­g the occasion from March to July this year.

The much- awaited festival provides a platform for relatives, family members from afar and abroad to come back and celebrate in the villages and enjoy traditiona­l dishes such as Kelupis, Wajid and others.

According to Kampung Peliau chief Singan Hujan, the annual event will be held at the Kedayan villages in Bekenu and Lambir constituen­cies.

He said this Sunday ( Mar 24) it will be the turn for Kampung Beraya in Lambir and Kampung Jambu and Kampung Kawang in Bekenu to organise the event which will be open to neighbouri­ng villagers and those outside the villages.

Singan added during the festival, all the villagers from the said kampungs will prepare dishes and traditiona­l kelupis on a gotong-royong basis.

“The main highlight of the celebratio­n is the performing of ‘ tahlil’, ‘ yasin recital ‘and ‘doa selamat’,” he said.

Singan said the annual festival celebrated by the Kedayan community especially in Sibuti region aimed to preserve their identity and cultural heritage.

He said starting from last week, the celebratio­n will continue to be held by the Kedayan villages every Sunday until late July.
