University of Sunderland to hold education fair in Kuching, Sibu
SIBU: University of Sunderland ( UoS) in the north- east of England will hold an education fair in Kuching and Sibu on March 23 and 24 respectively.
Students who are interested to go overseas for studies and their parents are invited to the two-hour fair which will start at 2pm.
Sunderland with a population of around 300,000 is about 20- minute drive to Newcastle.
It has two campuses - City Campus which caters to pharmacy, pharmaceutical and cosmetic sciences programmes and Sir Tom Cowie Campus.
Its pharmacy programme is highly regarded and recently re- accredited by the General Pharmaceutical Council (July 2018) for the maximum period allowed.
Pharmacy has been taught there since 1921 and the campus has recently undergone multimillionpound refurbishment to produce state- of- the- art facilities, like the “Living Lab” and simulation suites to allow students to learn in a pioneering environment. Its Masters degree is a four-year programme.
There are various reasons why students chose the institution to further their studies.
Among them, MPharm is the only qualification in the UK which leads to professional registration as a pharmacist.
The GaPhC figures show UoS had the highest pass rate in the 2017 pre-registration assessment at 93 per cent, and achieved 89.1 per cent, in 2018 which was substantially higher than the UK average of 78.8 per cent, as well as scoring the first in the UK for the clinical paper of the assessment.
Also, 97.5 per cent of its MPharm graduates find employment within six months of graduating.
The MPharm has over 90 per cent overall satisfaction according to the National Student Survey of 2018.
Research in Pharmacy there has been described as “worldleading” by the latest Research Excellence Framework.
The institution is also famous of its Cosmetic Science programme designed in collaboration with the cosmetic industry.
This stem science degree allows students to reach their potential to join the growing industry by gaining expertise in the formulation and manufacture of cosmetic, fragrance and personal care products.
This industry offers scientific careers and generates billions of pounds a year.
Students develop knowledge and skills in the design, formulation, manufacture, quality control and marketing of cosmetic and associated products.
They have the option to undertake an industrial placement between Years 2 and 3, which is supported by the faculty that has extensive contacts within the industry and vast experience to share, as well as teaching in state- of-the- art facilities.
This course ensures students are employable after graduation to enter the research and development part of the industry in manufacturing or the regulation department, or even become entrepreneurs and create their own cosmetic line, as well as enter the fields of business, sales and marketing, perfumery, media and TV.
There will be a Sunderland preview session for students interested in Pharmacy and Cosmetic Science programmes.
Dr Adrian Moore, head of School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences within the Faculty of Health Sciences and Wellbeing at the University of Sunderland will be invited to this preview session.
He has taught at the university for many years and previously worked in industry.
His background is primarily organic chemistry, and he continues to teach across the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes within the faculty, allowing students to learn from his expertise in the field.
He is also an external examiner for several other universities in the UK and has contributed to over 70 publications in both peer- reviewed journals as well as chapters in major edited works within his area of specialism.
Another speaker at the fair is Mrs Charlotte Earl- Sinha.
She is the admissions tutor for the MPharm programme and a senior lecturer in Clinical Therapeutics & Pharmacy Practice.
She qualified as a pharmacist 17 years ago and continues to practise and has taught at Sunderland for the past seven years. Her background is in community pharmacy and primary care as well as recruitment.
She maintains excellent external links with both local and national pharmacy providers.
Charlotte teaches across the MPharm undergraduate programme as well as related postgraduate programmes.
Her research interests involve examining the growing role of the community pharmacist, with particular reference to supporting patients with specific conditions.
