“It provides strategies and insight into how we in Sarawak we can develop our facilities, but also create educational platforms for our coaches and sports development personnel. This is all designed to achieve Sarawak’s target of becoming a sports powerhouse by 2024,” he added.
According to Ong, the conference included both practical workshops and presentations on a range of subjects including current preparation of the Chinese team for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and various types of strength training practices aimed to enhance physical performance.
The workshop took place over two days at Singapore Sports where the faci lities include a fully practical functioning gymnasium, physiology, nutrition bar, rehabilitation centre and biomechanics lab.
Presentations were delivered by experts in their field including Dr G Gregory Haff from Edith Cowan University and Julian Jones who has worked with Australian Olympic teams in weightlifting and swimming.
The purpose of the trip was to acquire latest knowledge in strength and conditioning practices and gain greater insight into creating High Performance Environment in different parts of Asia.
“Conferences like these allow us to develop and enhance our own practices for the High Performance Programme in Sarawak and many of these ideas will be shared among our programme and Sports Divisions,” Richards said.
