MIRI: Various measures have been taken by the contractor for wastewater treatment plant and sewer networks project here to overcome safety, traffic congestion and health hazard issues in relation to the project.

According to a press statement issued by Miri City Council (MCC) yesterday, Miri mayor Adam Yii had called for a dialogue between MCC, the Sewerage Services Department Sarawak (JPPS) and the main contractor for the project, Hock Seng Lee Berhad, early this month. The dialogue discussed and addressed the council’s concerns and public disquiet over safety, environment, traffic congestion and health hazard issues arising from the ongoing sewerage project.

It was mentioned during the dialogue that measures taken included preparing and submitting of traffic management plan to the council before commencement of on- site work; continuous monitoring of traffic flow including placing of signage, blinkers, barriers and diversions on site; continuous monitoring of any blind spots created by construction work ( hoarding erection); displaying of project information as well as continuous monitoring of works on public drainage that may affect the construction work.

As for the open cutting/trenching works on site, among measures taken are minimising of stockpile at site to prevent public complaint of unsafe and dusty environment; minimising of road damage by excavator by using heavy duty rubber mat; providing water spray to minimise dust during road cutting works before excavation as well as providing more flagmen on site whenever traffic diversions are done or when the construction works are affecting traffic flow.

The statement added that the council constantly reminded the contractor to abide by the laws and regulations to ease public concerns.

“Miri City Council welcomes this sewerage project as it will enable Miri City to better manage its sewerage as well as wastewater, and propel Miri City into the modern era.

“MCC hopes that Mirians will understand and bear the inconveniences and problems arising during the construction,” added the press statement.

Meanwhile, the project which started on March 30, 2017 is progressing at 48 per cent and is expected to be fully completed by June 3, 2021.

Open trenching works within the town centre, especially along the main line at Jalan Silvia, Jalan Kipas, Jalan Merpati, Jalan Sukan, Jalan Bulan Sabit and Jalan Sehati, are also progressing well and are expected to be completed by December this year.
