-

MIRI: Not many know of the existence of National Craft Institute (IKN), an educational institution to produce highly skilled youths in the field of handicraft.

Established in 2001, IKN is promoting and introducing the institute at the on-going National Craft Festival (FKK) in Bintang Mega Mall here.

Though not well-known, the institute produces highly skilled and knowledgeable graduates with where some becoming batik, ceramic, engraving and weaving entrepreneurs.

Communities have to open their eyes to the success of IKN and remove the perception that the institute is only for those who failed to get into institutions of higher learning.

IKN always prioritises the quality of student selection with at least five credits including Bahasa Malaysia and Arts in Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) for a diploma course.

At certificate level, the applicant must have three credits, including art, in SPM examination.

IKN is equivalent to other institution of higher learning and sends excellent students to Japan while others pursue studies up to master’s degree.

IKN graduates are also knowledgeable about the business world.

IKN in Rawang, Selangor offers six courses in Batik Craft, Weaving Craft, Ceramic Craft, Wood Craft, Metal Craft and Bamboo and Rattan Arts.

There is no application fee and students are provided free accommodation and meals with monthly pocket money of RM150 for diploma level and RM120 for certificate course.

Student intake for the 2019 session is still open until May3.
