Teo soldiers on as Sanjay advances, Harith exits premier category at CMS Squash Circuit

KUCHING: Patrick Teo of Kuching earned his place in the Men’s Open semi-finals of the CMS Squash Circuit Samarahan Leg after he beat Armed Forces’ Farhan Md Nor in the quarterfin­als at the Sarawak Squash Centre, Petra Jaya yesterday.

The tournament’s top seed will meet another soldier Mohd Eddie Iswandi Matzen, the fifth seed after the latter outdid teammate Azrie Rahmat 9-11, 12-14, 11-5, 11-7, 11-9 in another match.

Other semi-finals berths were dominated by Armed Forces representa­tives, with third seed Tonno Sigub defeating Mustafa Kamal Faseha Johari and Shahrin Wahab, the seventh seed, shocked second seed Clement Kok Thai Wei of Miri PMMSA 7-11, 11-3, 11-2, 11-5.

In the Men’s Premier category, top seed Sanjay Singh Chal of Miri Bintang, who received a first round bye, kicked off his challenge with a 11-6, 11-3, 11-5 win over Kuching Desmond Ong Yan Sheng of Kuching in the quarterfin­als.

The Southeast Asian (SEA) Games 2017 men’s singles gold medalist will meet fourth seed Clifford Tay Ye Jie in the last four after the latter disposed of Albert Chin Zhi Qian 7-11, 11-7, 9-11, 11-9, 11-9.

However, Sanjay’s teammate Harith Danial Jefri was unable to progress to the next round as he lost 10-12, 6-11, 11-6, 4-11 to Yusuf Jamal Abdulla Mohamed Thani of Bahrain.

Yusuf’s semi-finals opponent is compatriot Ahmed Abbas Sayed Shubbar Ahmed who upset the second seeded player from Sabah Kayden Liaw Juin Wuen 11-3, 7-11, 11-7, 11-3.

A total of 140 players from Kuching, Samarahan, Sibu, Miri, Sabah and Bahrain are competing in this tournament organised by Squash Associatio­n of Samarahan (SAS) and sanctioned by Squash Racquets Associatio­n of Sarawak (SRAS).

Other categories contested include Grassroot, Boys and Girls U9, 11, 13, 15, 17 and Men’s Doubles.
