MP wants Education Ministry to handle dilapidated schools in Lubok Antu
KUCHING: Lubok Antu is among the areas in Sarawak that have many dilapidated schools – all in dire need of upgrading, says its parliamentarian Jugah Muyang.
According to him, some of the schools that have been identified are SK Nanga Menyebat, SK Nanga Kesit, SK Nanga Menjuau, SK Nanga Tibu, SK Uyau, SK Basi and SK Entalau.
He regards these primary schools as being in a very bad condition, with many having leaking roofs and rotting walls, and that some are on the verge of collapsing.
Furthermore, these schools are still using generators as their main source of electricity supply.
“I feel very sad to see that dilapidated schools in such condition exist in the rural areas. The condition of these schools remains much like what it was 40 years ago, without any change.
“In view of this, the Ministry of Education ( MoE) ought to be committed in ensuring that the issue of dilapidated schools in Lubok Antu is addressed as soon as possible,” he said when debating the King’s Address in Parliament yesterday.
Jugah also pointed out SMK Engkilili as being ‘ very dilapidated’, with its infrastructure being far behind other secondary schools in Sarawak.
He said the condition of the school was witnessed by MoE officers themselves when they paid a visit on Feb 20 following his complaint.
“The school is in desperate need of a new 13- classroom block as they (students) are now placed under the teachers’ quarters.
“At the same time, a new teachers’ administrative block must also be added immediately,” he stressed, calling for upgrading works on the school to be carried out with urgency.
