Sarawak Energy affirms commitment to environmental awareness, sustainability
KUCHING: Sarawak Energy is committed to achieving environmental excellence in line with its Key Focus Area ( KFA) 2020.
Its Health, Safety, Security and Environment ( HSSE) group vice president Marconi Madai said the corporation has always strived to ensure that its actions did not harm the environment.
“In Sarawak Energy, minimising any negative impact of our operations and maximising the positive impact of what we do for our community are part of our priority. We are already embarking on environmental awareness, conservation and management at all our operations,” he said before signing a memorandum of understanding ( MoU) yesterday with the Department of Environment ( DoE) Sarawak, represented by acting director Amirul Aripin.
The signing ceremony was witnessed by DoE Malaysia director-general Dato Dr Ahmad Kamarulnajuib Che Ibrahim.
Sarawak Energy was one of nine organisations in Sarawak that sealed the MoU with DoE Sarawak to promote environmental awareness and sustainability.
Marconi said Sarawak Energy works closely with various government agencies, corporations and nongovernmental organisations ( NGOs) to ensure good environmental conservation and management practices.
Among the agencies are DoE, Natural Resources and Environment Board ( NREB), Forest Department, Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC), World Wildlife Foundation and Wildlife Conservation Society, he added.
“With DoE alone, we have been involved in many environmental awareness programmes annually after the signing of the MoU in 2013. As part of collaboration programmes, we also initiated our own initiatives related to environmental awareness for both internal and external stakeholders,” he said.
With the MoU, Marconi pointed out that Sarawak Energy is making a clear and firm commitment in recognising its growing role in environmental stewardship.
“Sarawak Energy is privileged and honoured to be a partner of this programme and to sign the MoU to support the DoE towards environmental excellence, especially in Sarawak.
“We believe that we need more effort and energy to not only conduct various programmes, but also ensure that all programmes conducted will be meaningful and sustainable.”
He hoped the MoU would inspire others to strengthen their collaboration with the DoE in terms of promoting environmental awareness and conservation.
