36 athletes vie for honours in Crossfit Kuching finale

KUCHING: Thirty- six fitness athletes from all over Kuching took part in the The Reebok CrossFit Kuching 19.5 Open Challenge at CrossFit Kuching last Sunday to draw down the curtain on this season’s Reebok CrossFit Games Open.

The workout was announced on Friday ( Mar 22) via the CrossFit Games website.

This final session was a ‘ For time’ workout of thrusters and pul l- ups fol lowing a scheme of 33- 27- 21- 15- 19 reps of both movements.

CrossFit Kuching almost made a clean sweep of the top three spots in the four categories.

The Female Scaled Category saw Charlene Bong, Lau Lee Shan and Chloe Chong in the top three.

Another CrossFit Kuching trio of Elina Lim, Audrey Chai and Kayla Wong claimed the first three positions for the Female RX Category.

Top three in the Male RX Category were Tay Kian Pei, Henry Bong and Perry Law.

Chang Wen Xiang of GymBox was the only athlete who prevented a total domination by CrossFit Kuching when he finished third in the Male Scaled Category behind Justin Foo and David Tan.

According to the organising chairman and also CrossFit Kuching owner Carter Wei, The Reebok CrossFit Games Open is an annual internatio­nal fitness competitio­n held over five weeks with five separate workouts to eventually crown the Fittest male and female on earth.

The global phenomenon began in 2011 with 26,000 worldwide participan­ts and it has grown to over 5 0 0,0 0 0 worldwide participan­ts in 2018.

“Its format is very simple, do the announced workout every week at a CrossFit gym (CrossFit Kuching), where a certi f ied judge will judge your workout, once complete submit it online and then there will be a virtual leaderboar­d to see where you place in the world,” he said.

Associatio­n was formed in 2017 by a group of passionate Kuchingite­s who wanted to raise awareness of health and fitness in Kuching.

The Reebok CrossFit 19.5 Open Challenge was run by CrossFit Kuching and sponsored by Reebok, Cluster and Usana.

This event was supported by local gyms with athletes from Knight PTC, GymBox, Bornean Wolves Studio, SS Fighters and Level Up.

The competitio­n was a union of all local gyms with the same mission and vision, to promote health and fitness in Kuching.
