Rep calls for transparency over SEDC’s Carmor Plains Station purchase

-

KUCHING: The move by Sarawak Economic Development Corporation ( SEDC) to acquire the privately- owned Carmor Plains Station in Darwin, Australia needs to be explained in detail for the sake of transparency.

Pending assemblyman Violet Yong, who made the call, said this was because no details or explanation on the investment have been provided by SEDC thus far.

“The people will want to know how much is the investment and what economic and financial benefits it will bring to the state and the people...these are the explanation that the people want.

“But there has been no explanation or details (thus far), which the people ought to know,” she told a press conference at DAP Sarawak headquarters, here yesterday.

Yong was referring to the recent visit by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg and his entourage to Carmor Plains Station, which Abang Johari disclosed would soon be acquired by SEDC.

A statement released by the Chief Minister’s Office in conjunction with the visit said the station will become a fattening centre for cattle that are sent from Rosewood Cattle Station for export, and a breeding station for buffaloes that will be sent to Limbang for domestication.

Rosewood Cattle Station in Western Australia was acquired by SEDC in 1982.

Yong added that Sarawak has vast land as well as suitable climate for the rearing of cattle and buffaloes, and expressed her scepticism over the investment.
