SGH’s Urology Department to hold Prostate Awareness Campaign in April

KUCHING: Sarawak General Hospital’s ( SGH) Urology Department will be holding ‘Prostate Awareness Campaign’ at Vivacity Megamall here on April 6 and 7 from 10am to 6pm.

The event aims to educate members of the public on prostate conditions and other common urological problems through awareness talks, Q& A sessions with urologists.

“Prostate cancer is the second most common occurring cancer in men worldwide with 1.3 million new cases in 2018. In Malaysia, a large percentage of men diagnosed with prostate cancer present late with higher stage disease when compared to western countries.

“Other conditions affecting the prostate gland that are also common are Benign Prostatic Hyperplasi­a. Symptoms may include urinary problems such as weak urinary stream, urinary incontinen­ce, needing to go to the toilet often and waking up at night frequently to pass urine amongst others,” an SGH Urology Department spokespers­on said in a press statement yesterday.

Members of the public are welcomed to the campaign with activities including lucky draw session, games and free balloons for children.

Meanwhile, a free prostate screening clinic will be held at SGH on April 20 from 9am to 5pm. The screening will comprise consultati­on and examinatio­n, urine test as well as additional ultrasound and/or blood test if required.

Men who wished to be screened for prostatic conditions particular­ly those over 45 years old with urinary problems are urged to drop by for the free screening.
