Liberica coffee to make debut at symposium
KUCHING: Sarawak’s homegrown Liberica coffee beans will be making their debut at the first ever Borneo Coffee Symposium to be held at the Old Court House here from April 6-7.
The symposium endorsed by the Ministry of Modernisation of Agriculture, Native Land and Regional Development and supported by Sarawak Convention Bureau ( SCB) is jointly organised by local Earthlings Coffee Workshop and Malaysia Coffeeology Collective.
Dedicated to gathering coffee experts from around the world, the symposium is set to attract top- class baristas, local artisan roasters, independent specialty cafes, coffee bean suppliers, coffee trade industry players as well as aspiring coffee aficionados in effort to promote Liberica coffee beans and their potential.
Highlights of the event include the world’s first Sarawak Liberica International Roasting Competition to be held concurrently with the symposium, and the cupping or coffee tasting session which will be open to the public.
The symposium also aimed to be a knowledge exchange catalyst

for all industry stakeholders from renowned coffee scientists and researchers to experienced coffee farmers and estate owners.
The symposium will touch on current issues affecting the coffee industry such as the cultivation of sustainable highquality lowland coffee plants that come in various species and varieties - the key to unlocking Sarawak’s coffee industry’s potential. Coffee industry heavyweight Dr. Steffen Schwarz who is Coffee Consulate founder will present a keynote address entitlede ‘Current Global Challenges to Coffee Cultivation’.
Other speakers include Fang Cheng Lun, the Special Award recipient at the Taiwan Specialty Coffee Evaluation in 2007,
Lin Che- Hao the founder of Taiwan Coffee Laboratory, and Sarawak’s very own Earthlings Coffee founder Dr. Kenny Lee who is the Kaldi Award winner for Green Coffee Findings.
Minister of Modernisation of Agriculture, Native Land and Regional Development Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas when commenting on the symposium emphasised his ministry’s commitment to support further research and development on the commodity and link smallholders to buyers.
“On a global scale, coffee is one of the most sought-after commodities and Sarawak has what it takes to become a leading producer of this agricultural product in the region. The local coffee industry is also assured of strong support from the Sarawak government and we would explore more avenues to maximise its potential.
“The Borneo Coffee Symposium will set precedence and mark a new era for the industry in Sarawak,” he said.
