KUCHING: Sarawak- based marine engineering and infrastructure specialist, Hock Seng Lee Bhd ( HSL) presented best student awards to Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus’ ( Swinburne Sarawak) outstanding civil engineering students recently.

HSL’s executive director Simon Lau Kiing Kang explained that the industry awards were part of the company’s collaboration with Swinburne Sarawak to promote academic excellence and advancement in education within the community.

“The recipients went through a series of interviews with HSL before they were conferred the award. Aside from their impressive academic transcripts, these students have also shown remarkable confidence in their communication skills during the interviews. We hope that this will encourage them to do even better in preparation for the leap into their career eventually,” said Lau in a press release issued yesterday.

According to Lau, HSL hopes to increase collaboration with higher education institutions to attract and retain new talents.

“We believe that the younger generations are our hopes for the future. We hope that through these programmes, we will be able to play a more effective role in assisting and motivating students to be the best they can be and at the same time, allow the students to be more aware of their career options in the industry before they graduate. HSL is at the forefront of innovation and emerging technologies in construction and engineering and we believe that through these collaborations with Swinburne, we are able to do our part in preparing the students for the industry. They are always welcome to build their career with us after they graduate,” he said.

The students who received the awards from HSL were Chew Tseng King, Darren Ho Zong Yao, Liew Hock Rui, Lim Chee Hui, Lim Zi Chao and Michelle Ng Mung Ling.

Swinburne Sarawak campus has produced more than 6,200 graduates since its first graduation ceremony in 2004, many of whom are currently working with HSL.

In his welcoming speech, Swinburne Sarawak’s Pro Vice- Chancellor Professor Lau Hieng Ho thanked the industry partners for their contributions in developing students in their respective field of specialisation through internships, engagements of students in actual company projects as well as offering scholarship awards and bursaries.
