BDA, group to jointly hold riverbed clean-up exercise

-

BINTULU: A community programme to clean up Sungai Kemena riverbed and its surrounding areas will be held jointly by Bintulu Development Authority ( BDA) and a group who call themselves Trash Hero Bintulu, on April 7.

The programme, to be carried out on a ‘gotong- royong’ basis, is slated to start at 2.30pm at Bintulu Esplanade. Members of the local community here are also encouraged to join the cleanup exercise.

BDA general manager Rodziah Morshidi in commenting on the programme said she welcomed any effort by non- governmental organisations ( NGOs) or even groups of friends who want to carry out voluntary clean- up activities in town.

“BDA will support such activities and we are in the midst of collecting data to give recognition to active groups who manage to collect the most rubbish in their programmes, and there is a good sum in cash prize for winners,” she said.

Thus, she urged the groups to provide any relevant information on their programmes to BDA for compilation so that by year end, the winners can be announced.

Meanwhile, Rodziah also expressed her satisfaction with BDA’s effort to promote public awareness on cleanliness, which has gradually paid off.

“I can see now that the public have started to work alongside BDA on cleanliness matters especially at our Tanjung Batu beach. They are aware of their responsibility, it’s happening now and self- regulation is the way forward for us to have a better and cleaner Bintulu,” she said.

Rodziah congratulated the NGOs, groups and individuals who have voluntarily come forward to clean up the beach and the surrounding areas for the betterment of future generations.
